Have you ever asked your middle school science class a question and been met with complete silence?
You know the kind of silence.
You ask a question, wait patiently, and scan the room. A few students suddenly become very interested in their desks. Someone starts sharpening a pencil. And eventually, the same two students raise their hands.
Getting middle school students talking about science can be challenging. But sometimes, all it takes is the right conversation starter to get students curious enough to share what they think.
Science conversation starters don’t have to be complicated. In fact, some of the best ones begin with a surprising statement, a misconception, or a question that makes students think, Wait…is that actually true?

Why Use Conversation Starters in Science Class?
Conversation starters are a simple way to get students thinking before beginning a new lesson or unit.
They can help students:
- Activate prior knowledge
- Reveal misconceptions
- Build curiosity about a new topic
- Practice explaining their thinking
- Hear different perspectives from classmates
- Develop scientific discussion skills
- Become more comfortable participating in class
Best of all, they don’t require a complicated setup or a lengthy lesson plan.
A single interesting question can create several minutes of meaningful discussion.
Science Conversation Starters That Spark Curiosity
The best science conversation starters aren’t always questions with obvious answers. Instead, they encourage students to make predictions, defend their ideas, and reconsider what they thought they knew.
Here are a few ideas you can use in your middle school science classroom.

“Is This True or False?”
Present students with a statement and ask them to decide whether it is true or false.
For example:
“A heavier object always falls faster than a lighter object.”
Ask students to vote before revealing the answer.
Then ask:
- Why do you think that?
- What evidence would support your answer?
- Can you think of an example?
- Would your answer change under different conditions?
The goal isn’t just to get the correct answer. The real learning happens when students explain why they think the answer is correct.
“Which One Doesn’t Belong?”
Give students several scientific terms, objects, or phenomena and ask them to decide which one doesn’t belong.
For example:
Evaporation – Condensation – Freezing – Photosynthesis
There may be an obvious answer, but students may also come up with different ways to justify their thinking.
This is a great reminder that science discussions don’t always have to begin with a single correct answer. Sometimes, explaining your reasoning is just as important.
“What Do You Think Would Happen If…?”
Hypothetical questions are excellent conversation starters because they encourage students to apply what they know.
Try questions like:
- What would happen if Earth suddenly stopped rotating?
- What would happen if there were no decomposers in an ecosystem?
- What would happen if friction disappeared?
- What would happen if plants could no longer perform photosynthesis?
Students don’t need to know everything about the topic before discussing it. These questions can help create curiosity before students begin learning.
“Convince Me”
Give students a scientific claim and ask them to convince you that it is true or false.
For example:
“The Moon has phases because Earth’s shadow covers different parts of the Moon.”
Students can discuss whether they agree or disagree and explain their reasoning.
This type of conversation starter is especially useful because it helps uncover misconceptions before they become harder to correct.

Use Two Truths and a Lie as a Science Conversation Starter
One of my favorite ways to get students talking at the beginning of a science unit is to use the familiar game Two Truths and a Lie.
Students are presented with three statements. Two are true, and one is false.
Their job is to figure out the lie.
Sounds simple, right?
But once students begin discussing their choices, the activity can quickly turn into a meaningful science conversation.
Students may disagree with one another. They may change their minds after hearing another student’s explanation. They may discover that something they have always believed about science isn’t actually true.
And suddenly, they’re talking about science.
How to Use Two Truths and a Lie in Your Science Classroom
There are several ways to use this activity depending on your class and your goals.
1. Vote Individually
Display the three statements and have students vote for the one they believe is the lie.
Students can vote by:
- Holding up one, two, or three fingers
- Writing their answer on a whiteboard
- Using hand signals
- Moving to different areas of the classroom (4 corners-style or would-you-rather style)
After voting, ask a few students to explain their choices before revealing the answer.
2. Discuss in Small Groups
Give students time to discuss the statements with a partner or small group.
Ask them to agree on which statement they think is the lie.
This approach is especially helpful for students who may not feel comfortable speaking in front of the entire class. Discussing their ideas with a few classmates can make participation feel less intimidating.
3. Choose a Side of the Room
Label three areas of your classroom with the numbers 1, 2, and 3.
Students move to the number representing the statement they believe is the lie.
Then ask students to discuss their reasoning with the other people in their group.
Before revealing the answer, invite each group to explain why they made their choice.
4. Reveal the Answer…and Keep Talking
The answer slide is not the end of the activity.
It is the beginning of the conversation.
After revealing the lie, ask students questions such as:
- Were you surprised by the answer?
- What made that statement sound believable?
- Why do you think this is a common misconception?
- What evidence supports the correct answer?
- Has anyone changed their mind?
These follow-up questions can turn a quick warm-up activity into a meaningful scientific discussion.

One of my favorite times to use conversation starters is at the beginning of a unit.
Instead of immediately telling students what they will learn, give them something to wonder about.
Let them make predictions.
Let them disagree.
Let them discover that science is full of surprising ideas.
When students become curious about a question, they have a reason to want to learn the answer.
That curiosity can make a powerful difference.
Science Class Doesn’t Have to Start With Notes
Starting a lesson with a conversation starter doesn’t mean sacrificing instructional time.
In fact, a short discussion can help students become more engaged with the learning that follows.
Try beginning your next science class with a statement that makes students stop and think.
Ask them to choose a side.
Ask them to defend their answer.
Ask them to explain their reasoning.
And most importantly, give them permission to be wrong.
Sometimes the best conversations in science class begin with a misconception, a surprising fact, and the question:
“Wait…is that really true?”
