Description
Do your students really understand protein synthesis, or did they just memorize definitions? This no prep activity challenges students to recognize the steps of protein synthesis and compare them to two more common processes – making a cake and building a toy.
For analogy 1, students read a very detailed explanation of how using a cookbook to find a recipe and then using it to make a cake is analogous to protein synthesis. Then, they identify which part of protein synthesis relates to each part of making the cake.
For analogy 2, a less detailed explanation is provided related protein synthesis to building a toy. Students again have to match each part of protein synthesis to the process of building a toy.
3 analysis questions are included which ask students to draw connections.
One extension task offers students the opportunity to create their own analogy with prompts added.
This activity is provided as a print-and-go PDF and also as a downloadable Google Doc which can be assigned digitally for students on Google Classroom. Please note that this activity is not editable!
