Description
How do specialized plant structures increase the probability of successful reproduction? This hands-on, evidence-based activity gives middle school students the opportunity to investigate that question by dissecting a flower, examining 12 stations with specialized plant structures, making observations and predictions, and using evidence to connect structure to function.
Designed specifically for NGSS MS-LS1-4, this resource goes beyond simply labeling the parts of a flower. Students investigate how structures help plants attract pollinators, transfer pollen, and disperse seeds—and use their observations to explain how these structures can increase reproductive success.
2 Activities:
Part 1 – Students dissect a flower and identify how pollen is transferred to an egg and produces a seed.
Part 2 – Students travel to 12 stations with photographs or samples of various plant adaptations including ways that plants attract pollinators, help pollen get transferred to stigma, and disperse seeds.
What’s included:
- 10 page student handout includes directions, data and observation tables, and analysis questions for flower dissection and station activity.
- 12 stations for students to examine – use photos or bring in your own samples.
- 3 page teacher’s guide including set up, materials, common misconceptions and differentiation ideas.
- suggested answers to data and observation tables and analysis questions
Grades 6–8
This resource is a great fit for teachers looking for a hands-on plant reproduction activity, flower dissection, plant structures activity, seed dispersal activity, or NGSS MS-LS1-4 resource that gets students observing, thinking, and using evidence like scientists.
