Description
Make your minerals unit extra sweet with this Christmas Rock Candy Lab! In this hands-on middle school science activity, students grow sugar crystals while exploring how crystals form, what supersaturated solutions are, and how sugar crystals compare with naturally occurring minerals.
Students prepare a concentrated sugar solution, suspend a sugar-coated skewer in the solution, and observe crystal growth over several days. As their crystals develop, they record observations, analyze evidence, and connect their results to the science of mineral formation.
With optional red and green food coloring, this experiment adds a festive Christmas twist to your Earth science lessons without sacrificing meaningful science learning.
What’s Included?
- Step-by-step student procedure for preparing the solution and setting up the experiment
- Daily observation suggestions to help students track crystal growth over time
- Six analysis questions covering crystal structure, supersaturation, nucleation, and mineral formation
- Teacher’s guide with background information, preparation instructions, safety reminders, and troubleshooting tips
- Suggested answers for all analysis questions
- Extension activities including crystal-growth investigations, mineral comparisons, and a claim-evidence-reasoning (CER) writing prompt
Designed for grades 6–8, this activity combines a fun seasonal experiment with observation, data collection, scientific reasoning, and opportunities to connect classroom models to real-world geological processes.
