This 8 station hands on lab activity will help your middle schoolers learn about the rock cycle.
Hang the station numbers and directions for each station around your room. Allow students to work in partners, small groups, or individually to travel from station to station completing mini labs that explore different parts of the rock cycle. As they travel, students complete the data collection worksheet (digital or print-and-go) and the analysis questions. Each station takes about 3 minutes to complete.

Station 2: Chemical Weathering
Station 3: Glacial Erosion
Station 4: Erosion by water
Station 5: Deposition
Station 6: Formation of sedimentary rocks
Station 7: Formation of metamorphic rocks
Station 8: Formation of igneous rocks

Materials you’ll need (per group):
  • sugar cube
  • small square of sandpaper
  • paper towel
  • 20 mL vinegar
  • small piece of chalk
  • paper cup
  • ice
  • pebbles
  • 3 trays of sand
  • water
  • clear jar with lid
  • soil
  • 3 Starburst candies
  • wax paper
  • plastic knife
