Description
Are your students struggling to keep track of the steps of protein synthesis? This activity helps them understand transcription and translation using a easy model.
How this activity works:
-
Students choose 1 of 20 DNA templates and copy it onto their worksheets.
-
Students transcribe their DNA template into mRNA codons, using complementary base pairing rules.
-
Students translate the mRNA codons into complementary tRNA anticodons.
-
Students find the anticodons hanging in 8 posters around the classroom. Each anticodon translates into an amino acid word.
-
Students assemble their amino acid words into a protein sentence.
-
Students can check their sentences using an optional website or handing it in to the teacher.
-
Space is provided for students to decode 4 DNA templates into protein sentences.
-
An optional extension activity is provided. Students can create their own protein sentences and write the DNA template that codes for it.
Full answer keys provided.
