Description
Engage students as they learn about the layers of the earth and the theory of plate tectonics in this simple to use scavenger hunt. Students travel to 10 stations where they will find 10 questions. The answers to each question are in short paragraphs on different stations. This allows students lots of movement around the classroom and the opportunity to read the 10 short paragraphs about layers of the earth and the theory of plate tectonics several times.
The activity works great to front load the content because no prior knowledge is needed – all answers can be found at the stations. Includes questions such as:
-
The lithosphere is divided into __ plates. (tectonic)
-
Seismic waves are vibrations produced by __. (earthquakes)
-
The thinner type of crust is the __ crust. (oceanic)
-
The theory of plate tectonics is also called the theory of __ drift. (continental)
-
One of the ways we know that the continents move is because they appear to fit together like a __. (puzzle)
As students travel around they room, they complete the answer grid which has some letters highlighted. The letters will spell out the answer to a riddle (“Which side of a turkey has the most feathers?” “The outside.”)
This activity includes a modified version in which students are told which of the stations to find each of the answers.
Simple to use – just print and go! My students took about 25-30 minutes to complete this activity with no prior knowledge at all.
