Learn about the monarch butterfly. Several generations of monarchs are born and die along the way as they migrate thousands of miles between Canada, the United States, and Mexico. The Bar-Tailed Godwit is the bird with the longest nonstop migration, flying more than 8000 miles without stopping as they migrate across the Pacific Ocean. The Arctic Tern famously has the longest migration of any known animal, traveling from the Arctic to Antarctica every year. The Bar-Headed Goose’s migration takes it to altitudes over 20,000 feet as they fly over the Himalayas. Salmon migration is well known because not only do salmon have to swim upstream every year to spawn, they also use their sense of smell to return to the same stream they were spawn from.

In addition to sub plans, this resource is a great early finisher activity or enrichment activity for students during a unit on scientific theory.
