Bring some North Pole fun to your genetics unit with this engaging, hands-on Elf Genetics activity! Students become elf geneticists as they use probability and coin tosses to determine the genotype and phenotype of their very own genetically unique elf.

In this interactive classroom activity, students travel around the room to 12 Elf Genetics stations. At each station, students explore a different fictional elf trait with a dominant and recessive allele. Students toss pennies to randomly determine the two alleles their elf receives, identify the resulting genotype, and determine the corresponding phenotype.

After visiting all 12 stations, students will have the genetic information needed to reveal—and draw—their very own one-of-a-kind elf! 🧝🎄

With 12 independently determined traits, students can create 4,096 different possible combinations of elf traits!

How It Works

Students travel around the classroom and complete 12 Elf Genetics Stations.

At each station:

• Toss two pennies to determine which alleles their elf receives.
• Heads represents the dominant allele, and tails represents the recessive allele.
• Students record their two alleles and combine them to determine their elf’s genotype.
• Students use the genotype to determine their elf’s phenotype.
• Students repeat the process at all 12 stations to create a genetically unique combination of elf traits!
